Located on Majorca’s rugged east coast, the charming fishing town of Porto Cristo attracts a variety of visitors looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday. This authentic town has a quaint fishing harbour and doesn’t just depend on tourism. Just 40 miles from Palma, the town is a small family resort which is popular with couples looking for a relaxing spot away from the crowds and noisy nightlife and with yachtsman using the

nearby natural harbour. The town has a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars with many of the eateries having outdoor terraces where you can enjoy a pleasant meal looking out over the harbour and sea. Porto Cristo old town is a maze of colourful narrow lanes and has a beautiful esplanade with plenty of trees for shade.

The sandy Porto Cristo beach sits in a sheltered bay away from the main road. To each side of the town there are some quieter unspoilt beaches and pretty bays which can be reached via the local coastal bus service. Many of these sheltered beaches have a pretty pine covered hill backdrop and offer a range of water sports.

Although Porto Cristo is one of the quieter Majorcan resorts there is still plenty to do and see. The town makes an excellent base for coastal walks and hiking in the surrounding countryside with its farms, orchards and mountains. Close to the resort are the amazing Caves of Drach which feature one of the largest underground lakes in the world and the caves at Hams where many of the

Other excursions to take on your package holidays to Majorca can include a trip to the historic old town of Palma which is home to a magnificent Gothic cathedral, the old town of Arta, the monastery of San Salvador, Inca with its leather factory and market and neighbouring Manacor which is a centre of pearl harvesting and a well known market. The villages on the northern coast of the island are also worthy of a visit. For total relaxation take a boat trip along the islands coastline and admire the beautiful scenery of Majorca.

There are a couple of discos in Porto Cristo but nightlife here is generally very low-key. For some livelier nightlife you will need to head off to Cala Millor.

Porto Cristo

Porto Cristo enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with good weather for most of the year. During the summer months temperatures peak at 29C with 11 hours of sunshine a day and very little rainfall. Temperatures can rise to above 29C in August and September and produce humid conditions. Autumn weather is more changeable with more frequent rain but still enjoys sunny days and mild temperatures. February sees temperatures around 16C with 6 hours of sunshine a day. In late autumn there can be strong winds along the coastline and mornings can feel quite chilly. Winter months also enjoy mild temperatures and are still a great time to take one of the many holiday deals to Majorca which are always available throughout the internet.

Located on the quieter north coast of Majorca, the beach resort of Cala San Vicente is just 35 north east of Palma. This small peaceful resort is set in a great location on a beautiful stretch of the Majorcan coastline. The resort is ideal for families and couples looking for great package holidays in a tranquil setting with beautiful surroundings and quaint little beaches. Surrounded by attractive countryside and stunning mountains, the resort offers good accommodation and a working fishing village which add to the charm of Cala San Vicente. The resort makes an excellent base for coastal walks and exploring the surrounding countryside, forested mountainside and prehistoric caves. The older part of Cala San Vicente is a mix of traditional houses and tourist accommodation grouped around a shaded promenade and delightful beach which is shared with the local fishermen. The town has a fair selection of restaurants, bars and shops with nightlife being very low-key. Most visitors to the resort prefer spending the evenings enjoying a relaxing meal in the peaceful atmosphere of the town. The beachside restaurants serve some of the freshest seafood and fish in Majorca. For livelier nightlife there is nearby Puerto Polensa or Alcudia.

Cala San Vicente

The resort has three sandy beaches on a picturesque bay with amazing views of the cliffs of the Formentor peninsula. Visitors can enjoy the unspoilt main Cala Barques Beach which is regarded as the best of the three beaches, the secluded Cala Clara Beach and Cala Molins Beach. Cala Barques offers fantastic views, beachside restaurants and a wide range of water sports. All three fine sandy beaches gently slope to clean calm sparkling waters which make Cala San Vicente holidays a popular choice with families.

For a break from the relaxing beaches visitors can take a trip to the old town of Pollensa just three miles to the south of Cala San Vicente. Here you will find a popular Sunday market where haggling for bargains is regarded as the norm and a wider choice of restaurants and shops. Pollensa has lots of small winding roads where you will find top class restaurants and atmospheric tavernas.

Pollensa

For the more energetic Cala San Vicente offers plenty of sporting opportunities including diving, jet-skiing, sailing, horse riding and golf. There are some excellent golf courses near the resort for enthusiasts to enjoy a round or two on their travel deals to Majorca.

Cala San Vicente weather is slightly cooler than Majorca’s southern coast weather but it still enjoys hot summers and mild short winters. The resort is popular with holidaymakers who prefer slightly drier cooler temperatures to the much hotter temperatures in the south of the island. April sees temperatures around 20C rising to around 28C in August. June, July and August see clear blue skies with around 11 hours of sunshine a day and very little rain. Cala San Vicente is very popular with holidaymakers around Christmas and New Year when the resort still enjoys temperatures around 14C and plenty of sunshine.

Many visitors to Majorca (Mallorca) do not realise that the island has more than 60 wine estates producing over 300 different wines. The best time for wine enthusiasts to visit is in September when the grape harvest is well underway and many celebrations take place. Many of the tourist accommodations have their own vineyards.

Binissalem

Binissalem is home to Majorca’s leading vineyards and is the largest wine-producing region on the island. The family-run Macia Batle bodega produces a range of wines and offers tours where visitors can see the whole wine-producing process. The tour also gives visitors the opportunity to sample their award-winning vintage wines. Other well known bodegas in the area are the Jose Luis Ferrer Wine Estate which was awarded for producing the best sweet white wine in Spain and the eco-friendly Celler Tianna Negra which uses solar energy to produce in the region of 100,000 litres of wine every year. Vineyards cover about 400 hectares of the region.

Visit Binissalem from the 14th-26th September when the sleepy town comes alive to celebrate La Festa des Vernar. This annual wine festival celebrates the start of the autumn harvest. Visitors to the festival can enjoy parades, live music events, grape crushing competitions and of course the wine tasting which goes on all day, every day throughout the festival. On the final day of the festival there is a concert which is performed in the main square and in the evening visitors can enjoy a glass or two of wine whilst being entertained by the Binissalem giant puppets accompanied by xeremiers (traditional musical instruments). The festival reaches a climax on the final Saturday when the villages follow a drummer and piper to a field where a massive grape takes place!

grape vines

Binissalem is a quiet residential town just 12 miles inland from the islands capital Palma, ten minutes from the mountains and just half an hour from the golden sandy beaches on either side of the island. Visitors choose to spend their direct holidays to Majorca here in Binissalem as the town can only be described as unexploited, untouched, unspoilt and perfect for a relaxing holiday in a perfect climate. The magnificent Gothic church of Santa Maria of Robines dominates the town square and can be seen for miles around Binissalem. The church is now the site of the local parish museum. Many of the buildings here, many dating back to the 18th and 19th century here, display amazing architecture, stonework and carpentry and have special protection from future development. Binissalem is home to more small palaces than any other town on the island.

If you are interested in visiting the festival and enjoying the superb local wines and festivities there are plenty of late deals to Majorca throughout the internet.

The Sierra de Tramuntana Mountains and the Alfabia range of hills protect the vineyards from northerly winds, creating a micro-climate. Binissalem enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with dry warm summers and short winters.
